Remodel Week 3

surveying the scene--the temporary electrical service has been connected.

Justin works on demolition of mudroom siding..

The siding contains lead, so it has to be carefully removed and wrapped.

The garage is full of the stuff we plan to reuse.

Demolition continues.  The weather has been warm and sunny all week.  If only that holds true when the roof comes off.

Nothing left of the mud room except some studs and the floor.

no kitchen walls left--and no window either

This was May 15, and Sandy's on the phone wishing Tessa happy birthday.

deck railing gone and stored in the garage and much of siding removed

The beginning of footing excavations in the basement:  We were hoping to find existing footings down here that would support the new second floor.  No such luck.

The chimney is gone with plywood temporarily patching the roof.  The asbestos people are here to remove the kitchen floor (their chute is visible sticking through the window on the left.  This photo and the remaining photos were organized by Susan, with our thanks, while we were in Berkeley.

The kitchen floor has asbestor in it and must be removed by an authorized asbestos removal company.  Here the kitchen has been cordoned off.  Three days afrter the asbestos is removed the air quality will be tested.  If rendered "safe", we're allowed back in.

It wasn't safe to take the pictures ourselves, so the asbestos removal expert very kindly took these interior pictures for our blog.

the last remnants of the kitchen floor, carefully wrapped

A goldfinch seems undisturbed by all the activity.

Superintendents Zoe and Maya make sure everything is going smoothly.  The back fence has been removed allowing them a clear view of the proceedings..
